Common Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

by Stephen McConnell on December 13, 2021

There are many different reasons why erectile dysfunction occurs in ones life. Erectile Dysfunction is defined as, being unable to maintain an erection for sexual activity to take place. A male suffering from erectile dysfunction is recommended to see a doctor rather than attempting to self medicate. It is not recommended to put off medical attention. There is however actions you can take, to work with your doctor to improve the ability to have a full erection again. These are listed below.

The main causes of erectile dysfunction include psychological and health conditions, medications, trauma and lifestyle factors. Penile erection is a complex process in which the brain, nerves, muscles and blood vessels play a major role. In addition, hormones and emotions are at work. https://www.medicinenet.com/what_is_the_main_cause_of_erectile_dysfunction/article.htm

It is important to also realize that erectile dysfunction is very common. However, it isn’t the type of topic most males sit around and discuss with each other. Due to this fact a man can feel isolated and alone with such a problem. Take the initiative to seek medical attention for your erectile dysfunction. That way the problem can be identified and you can get the help you need to take care of these concerns.

Medical Conditions and Medicines

There are many different medical conditions, too many to list, that cause ED. A full discussion and transparency with your doctor, will allow them to fully diagnose the issue.  Here is a small list of common illnesses that side effect is ED:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Obesity
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Medications for any type of medical concern that could be the reason for the erectile dysfunction. Medications such as anti-androgens, appetite suppressants and antidepressants
  • Certain types of injuries to the genital area (penis or prostate) can result in erectile dysfunction. If you have been hit in that area you definitely need to let your doctor know about it. There may be internal damage that is preventing the penis from filling up with the blood it needs for an erection to take place.
  • In many instances various types of nerve damage (accidents to the spinal cord) can also create erectile dysfunction. This is because messages are sent that tell the veins close to the corpora cavernosa to open up. If they don’t do so then that additional blood flow can’t reach the penis. Without it an erection is not possible. It doesn’t matter how physically or mentally stimulated the man is.
  • Your overall lifestyle can result in erectile dysfunction as well. Studies show males that smoke, are overweight, don’t eat a healthy diet, drink alcohol, use recreational drugs, and that don’t exercise have a higher chance of it occurring. Smoking is a key factor as it can cause the blood not to flow like it should through the veins and arteries. It is also connected with lower testosterone levels.
  • Sensation loss on the penis. It is actually very common for rough masturbation, or incorrect ways of masturbation to reduce sensation in the nerve endings or worse damage the penis.

Mental

It is also possible that psychological problems can result in erectile dysfunction. Many readily dismiss this but it is scientifically proven.

  • Too much stress can definitely cause it to occur. That can create even more stress for the male and so the cycle continues.
  • Anxiety and depression are also known to cause erectile dysfunction to occur.
  • Too much Porn
  • Anger
  • Performance Anxiety

There are several types of medicines that can improve the chances of having an erection. These, in my opinion are not long term solutions. To improve the overall health of your heart and vascular systems, as well as, aim for a balanced emotional life style would have longer benefits to curing ED, and to a happier sex life. Steps to begin now that will help:

  • Exercise
  • Diet
  • There are many ways to begin the work for balanced emotions, and meditation is the general go to. Seeking a therapist, or a set of great friends that will help you work through anger issues, depression, anxiety and more. As the saying goes you are the sum of the five main people you spend the most time with.
  • Your doctor may need to adjust the dose of the medication you are taking. It is also possible to switch you to another type of medication. There are several for every type of medical concern out there so you aren’t going to be limited only to the one you currently use. Be patient and willing to experiment with the guidance of your doctor so you can get erections but also the medications you need for other health concerns.

By making significant changes to your life style, like walking more each day, eating more whole foods/ less processed foods, finding ways to reduce negative emotions and stress, over time will significantly help with ED and in many instances cure itself. Work with your doctor to design a diet and exercise plan that you are willing to stick to. You want it to become a complete lifestyle change for you instead of just something you do for a short period of time.
